Phil,
You'd be courting disaster that way, because you couldn't put sufficient =
downward force to keep the blade from popping out of the slot. DAMHIK! =
Besides, "steel plate" would undoubtedly be too soft, unlike a brace =
screw driver bit.
Incidentally, if you are undoing large screws, there are a few tricks. =
Because olde screw slots are /were cut with a "fly cutter", the slot is =
actually curved, rather than being flat. For a much better fit, grind a =
low angle convex curve in the bit. Also regrind the blade so that the =
sides are parallel instead of wedge shaped. Both of these help to NOT =
bugger up those large, expensive screws.
