Regulation Problem with New Parts

Paul,

Roger is right but even with the universal wippen there may not be any simple solutions that don't involve changing the spread, capstan and heel location. The whippen rail is adjustable on older Knabes so you might be able to compress the spread just wee bit, allowing you to align the jack further back. Generally, they were set up between 4 to 4 1/2 inches. Be aware that doing this will alter the geometry, regulation and touch weight, but it is a great way to experiment and learn something. It is not difficult to reset to th original and there should be small wooden wedges that mark the original location and were meant to keep the rail from working its way forward.

  Hi Paul,
When you have mismatched or incorrect parts, no amount of fudging will help you. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. You have done the right things in checking the blow dip and after touch relationship.

The knuckle is too large, and/or the centre pin to knuckle core is incorrect, and/or the spread of the flange screw to centre pin is incorrect.

Try a variety of new shanks, and install the correct shanks.

  Regards Roger

    Dear Friends:
I have a Knabe baby grand that has been rebuilt/refinished with new wippens and shanks/hammers. The problem is that that the knuckles push the jack into the cushion as it rebounds. There's no room for the jack to move. Even if I change the dip/blow distance, the problem is not solved. When the key is fully depressed, you can't "wink" the jack with your finger because it's pressed against the jack cushion in the window. The only thing I can guess is that the knuckle needs to be moved away from the flange, or maybe a smaller knuckle. The action feels "squshy". The piano belongs to the store I work for, and I would like to make suggestions to my boss as to what needs to be done. I hesitate to recommend a whole new set of parts, but this thing isn't going to get better without them. I'm not set up for rebuilding, and I don't do much action replacement, so I need some feedback from you all to! help solve this problem. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
