[pianotech] steinway parts list

Steinway considers their parts list (along with its prices) to be confidential. They publish it (hence they are the copyright owners) and they distribute it as they deem fit. At the least it is a violation of copyright to further distribute it without Steinway’s explicit permission.

If the price list is supposed to be confidential, much less copyrighted, and distribution is subject to explicit permission from Steinway, they are certainly quiet about it. Nowhere in the document we got from Steinway does it say anything about the price list being confidential, there is no copywrite information, no date of copyright, and there is no warning that copying or distributing the information is prohibited or in violation of their policy.

On the other hand it’s not really our decision to make. Steinway considers their parts list (along with its prices) to be confidential. They publish it (hence they are the copyright owners) and they distribute it as they deem fit. At the least it is a violation of copyright to further distribute it without Steinway’s explicit permission.

On the one hand I agree with Israel. But on the other hand, when someone is ready to get his/her piano rebuilt, how people are going to go to the trouble of comparing our cost for parts to the wholesale list? For one, one really needs to understand and know the names of parts, and which ones are needed for a particular piano. And second, even though this is supposed to be a confidential parts list, the fact that Steinway just published a new part list, (which I got, by the way, right after I asked for it), you can bet that some "unauthorized" people got it, too. The same with Schaff's price list. Any one can ask for it. But in all my years of rebuilding, I have yet to be challenged by any of my customers for the price of the parts.

The 2011 Steinway Parts Price List just published yesterday. Holly Andrew at <parts at steinway.com> will be glad to send you one - if you are a piano technician (having an account with Steinway is usually a very good indication of that...)

Please remember, wholesale parts prices are privileged business information , and sending the entire wholesale price list over a public e-mail list to which non-technicians might be subscribed is not a really good idea, is it? Some of us do mark up the parts prices as part of our business plan...

Does anyone have a current Steinway price list they could forward. Or, how do I get one from Steinway?
