You might take another look at that lid construction. It is probably a
poplar core, mahogany veneered panel with no cross-banding. Steinway, along
with several others, did not use cross-banding on their lid panels until
fairly recently (relatively speaking).

We've had to repair a number of these. Clean off the old glue and use lots
of biscuits.
