Hello Alexander, The piano tuning system you refer to is known as " The Wurlitzer Uniplate System". It was used in their Grands and Upright Players mostly in their Studio scale 808 as a player. Most of the Grands were of the 4' 9'" size. They were sold under names such as DeKalb, Farny, Strad, Kingston, Schaff Bros, and another Wurlitzer product whose name escapes me at the moment. It is thought by many that this is a " Melville Clark" invention. Wurlitzer bought the Melville Clark Co. about 1925 and used the Uniplate System on the Melville Clark brand " Apollo ". There wanted a high quality piano to complement their lower priced Wurlitzers to offer their dealers. This is the some thought the Cable Co. had when they bought the Conover Bros.Co. about 1900 To restring this piano use the original pins. use about two raps on the string replace the pin in the hole drive to the desired height then tighten string. After several strings are replaced you can make your own judgement as to how many wraps to use Remove pins by removing the wedges and taping out from the bottom. I have found that the pins are fairly soft metal. If any pins brakes I have replacement pins on hand. I would like to have the ser. no. number of single bass strings and the no. of bi-cord wraped strings. Also does the action have coil springs on both the repetition lever and the jacks. This information will be for the Foundation Museum "Piano Registry" for future Technicians who may come across this tuning system. We are restringing such a grand in my shop now. Hope this helps, feel free to call 972 - 278 - 9312. Regards, Jack Wyatt Dallas **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides.
