Calling Potential Clients

Matthew,

I think this is probably the single best thing you can do to grow your
business. Piano teachers are the one the best sources of referrals.

I moved to the area I currently live in 8 years ago. I spent my first few
weeks meeting every music teacher in town. I called them up, introduced
myself, and asked if I could meet them and leave them with a few business
cards. Almost every on of them was receptive. Most of them already had an
established relationship with another technician, but a few didn't and
scheduled tunings. Two or three of them started giving me referrals
immediately. At this point, 8 years later, many of them have become
clients and friends.

I also support their music teacher association by advertising in their
annual journal, and I offer to give a talk to groups of their students on
how the piano works. I call it "Inside the Piano". The kids usually love
it, many of them bring their parents and that leads to even more business.
I offer the class free of charge. Every kid leaves with a brochure I put
together on piano care, which of course has my name, phone number and web
site displayed on the cover. I've had people call me 3 or 4 years after
getting this brochure.

Spend time every day marketing, use your imagination, soon your problem
might be that your too busy.

Subject: Calling Potential Clients

I recently tuned for a client, who, after the tuning, gave me a two page
list of all the music/voice teachers in my area. Since I just relocated to
the area she was was being nice and helping me out. It has addresses and
phone numbers. Some have e-mails, but not all. Would it be polite or
professional procedure to call these people introducing myself so they know
I exist? Have any of you been faced with a similar circumstance? It sounds
like a good starting point, but on the other hand, I don't want to hurt
myself before I even get going. I tend to think of the telemarketers who
call me. What have you all been faced with in the past?

There's 17 people on the list, and I may make some business, but I want
advice first, before I jump into it.

Thank you,

Matthew
